Puntland (Galgalanews)-On June 2, 2018-The Islamist militant group Al-Shabab claimed to have carried out multiple coordinated attacks on a military base in Bali-Khadar, Puntland

According to a number of reliable sources, the militants conveniently timed their attack at a time when the army was busy observing the holy month of Ramadan and security was deemed relatively lax at the base.

In the aftermath, the number of dead and wounded was not immediately known. Both sides claimed victory.

However, a local resident speaking on condition of anonymity told Galgalanews that he had seen dead bodies and at least two destroyed military vehicles. Galgalanews could not verify any eyewitness reports as there was no official statement released by the Puntland government.

Al-Shabab leaders in Galgala and their affiliates:

Mohamed Abdillahi (Bataar) also known by his militant name (Abu-Hurayra) is the top Al-Shabab leader in Galgala and the commander of the latest attack on Bali-Khadar. He hails from Habar-Jeclo tribe and has a strong political relationship with Kulmiye party (the ruling party of the breakaway northern region of Somaliland).

Mr Bataar and his wife Faadumo Iiman are both well-known residents of Erigavo city.

The tension and enmity between the high-ranking Al-Shabab officials in Galgala came to the surface on a recent incident that crystallized the militants’ predominance of tribal loyalty over adherence to its ideology.

In March 2018, a lower ranking militant officer by the name Ahmed Araale also known as (Abu-Hanifa) who belongs to the same tribe (Habar-Jeclo) of Al-Shabab leader Bataar, was accused of contacting a foreign agency, a serious crime by Al-Shabab’s stander punishable by death.

The case was referred to an influential militant commander named Mohamed Kutubo from the Warsangeli tribe (the predominant tribe in Galgala mountains and surroundings) to preside over this serious case and make a decision based on the severity of the case.

As expected, Mohamed Kutubo rendered his decision; Abu-Hanifa should be executed without any delay.

That was not the end. The Emir of Galgala Mohamed Abdillahi-Bataar nullified the decision made by Mohamed Kutubo and refused to carry out the death penalty on his tribesman.

After a sustained argument and heated exchanges over this matter, Mohamed Kutubo was transferred to the South and upon arriving there he was placed under arrest, he has been in jail ever since.

The city of Erigavo which is under the control of the separatist regime in the north of the country-Somaliland is where:

Al-Shabab’s lifeline of military and economic supply comes from.

Coordinated meetings between Somaliland and Al-Shabab officials take place in order to destabilize Puntland and the rest of the country.

To accommodate and use as a pit stop for militants who are en route to Galgala Mountains.

Part two of our investigative report will focus on:

Who are the financiers of Al-Shabab in Maakhir and Puntland-who supplies and transports their weapons?

Is there individual collaborates in Bosaso and elsewhere?

Galgalanews will leave no stone unturned in our search to find and follow the truth wherever it may lead us.
